CDCS Certification: The complete Guide for India

CDCS stands for Certificate for Documentary Credit Specialists. It is a professional qualification in letters of credit, developed by the London Institute of Banking & Finance (LIBF) with industry experts and managed in partnership with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). If you work in trade finance, trade operations or export-import banking, it shows you can handle documentary credits to an international standard.

This guide explains what CDCS covers, how the exams work, what it costs and how to register from India. It is written for working professionals, so you can decide quickly whether it fits your career.

What does CDCS certification cover?

CDCS focuses on how documentary credits work in practice and on the rules that govern them. According to the awarding body, the syllabus includes:

  • The parties to a credit and their responsibilities
  • Payment methods and credit structures
  • Core transaction documents
  • Risk types and how to reduce them
  • Related products such as indemnities and guarantees
  • Document checking and presentation, including discrepancies and refusals
  • Transferable and standby credits, and reimbursement
  • eUCP, dispute resolution and compliance

The rules it draws on include UCP 600, ISP98, URR 725 and Incoterms 2020.

How are the CDCS exams structured?

The qualification has two units, each with its own exam:

Unit Exam
Foundations of Documentary Credits (FODC) 90-minute multiple-choice test
Management of Documentary Credits (MGDC) 105-minute exam: Part A multiple-choice, Part B document-checking exercises

You need at least 70% in each exam to pass. The awarding body states that exams are taken online with remote invigilation, so you can sit them from home or the office. You have 12 months from registration to complete both units.
